EPIDEMIOLOGY SEMINAR SERIES
Hiver 2017

Résumé

In Quebec, nurses can prescribe using standing orders or nurse prescribing. Standing orders are signed instructions of a provider which describe the parameters of specified situations under which the nurse may act to carry out specific orders for a patient presenting symptoms or needs addressed in the standing orders. Nurse prescribing (NP) came into effect in Quebec on January 11, 2016. Nurses are now allowed to prescribe in certain clinical situations. The differences between standing orders and nurse prescribing will be explained; the seminar will present the preliminary results of a research study of nurse prescribing. Objectives of the study: 1) to describe nurse prescribing and explain how it was implemented; 2) to identify the factors that limit or facilitate use of the right to prescribe.

OBJECTIFS:

At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

1) understand differences between standing orders and nurse prescribing
2) understand how standing orders and nurse prescribing can improve health services accessibility
3) understand the factors that limit or facilitate use of the right to prescribe
