In this presentation, Dr Jack will address a process evaluation that answers questions related to “how an intervention is delivered” provides valuable contextual information to help interpret findings from randomized controlled trials measuring the effectiveness of these same interventions. In this presentation, a mixed methods framework for embedding process evaluations within trials of complex interventions will be described, along with discussing issues related to process evaluation design and reporting. This discussion will draw on experiences from the British Columbia Healthy Connections scientific evaluation that includes a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of Nurse-Family Partnership compared to existing services to prevent child injury and improve a range of maternal and infant health outcomes, along with a longitudinal embedded process evaluation being conducted to explore how this nurse home visitation is implemented within 5 unique health authorities and to elucidate the contextual factors that influence public health nurses’ and organizations’ capacity to implement this intervention with fidelity.
